Vivaaaa Mexico! This Meixco vacation was very highly anticipated (and much overdue), and I am so glad that I decided to get away this year. I am going to share with you where I went, tips for choosing a resort, and how I figured out what to bring with me without going over the bag weight limit (a real concern of mine). I find these types of blog posts really helpful when booking a trip, so I hope that if you are planning to get away this can provide some insight from my recent experience!

My good friend Andreea and I decided we wanted to go away this winter, and fairly quickly decided Mexico would be the place to go. I have actually only travelled to Mexico for tropical vacays, but she has been pretty much everywhere… twice. Mexico tends to be a sure thing… weather is usually perfect, beaches are beautiful, and the food is good! There are a lot of concerns regarding travel to Mexico right now, and they did worry me before I left however once actually there I did not feel unsafe in any way. I think a lot of safety when travelling comes down to thinking things through, staying safe, and not putting yourself in vulnerable situations!
We decided to go to Cancun, and I am SOOOOO happy we did. Cancun offers the most BEAUTIFUL beach and water I think I have ever seen, and the sun was non stop. We spent a lot of time searching resorts to find something that met both of our needs and we finally landed on the Krystal Grand Punta Cancun resort! This resort is right on the peninsula and there was only one resort beyond ours, we were just about as far out as you can go! Steps (and I mean that literally) away from downtown Cancun makes this the perfect resort if you are into the party scene (which we were not… because we are boring), and the overall vibe of the location was really safe.
I would say the Krystal was kid “friendly” but definitely not a resort that caters to children which was ideal for us. I love kids, but was looking for a more quiet vacay without having to be that grumpy lady on the beach telling the kids having fun to stop shaking their sandy towel my way LOL. There were some kids at this resort, but few and far between.
The resort was immaculately kept, and very modern which was just our style. Accents of pink everywhere made this resort feel young and fresh and it was overall a really beautiful place to be. The food was amazing, and there were several options for each meal. One of our favourite parts of this resort was “The Grill” which acted like an a la carte, but could be used for all meals unlimited. This was not a buffet, and would make your food fresh to order. Omelettes were our favourite and it only took a day or two before the staff at The Grill had our favourite table, mimosas (mine with fresh orange juice, Andreea’s with grapefruit) ready for us before we even got there! We also ate here for dinner a couple of nights as neither of us are a huge fan of buffets! Even though buffets aren’t our first choice, I will say the buffet at the Krystal was also fantastic.
BEWARE OF THE A LA CARTE. lol… I say this sarcastically but not really. NEVER have I seen larger portions than at these a la carte’s. We only did two of the three, the Japanese restaurant and the Italian. The food was INSANELY GOOD, but the portions were ridiculously huge. We got played, we got played hard…. twice. There really wasn’t anyway to avoid this as we wanted to try various foods… but it was a LOT. Try and split with whoever you are travelling with or order food for the table! None the less, it was absolutely delicious…. just pack a conservative one piece for the day after 😐
We spent the majority of our time at the beach and if you check our the photo below you will see why! The beach at this resort was incredible. Not only was the sand very white and the water VERY blue, it was a really large and deep beach which allowed you to spread out. The set up of the beach also allowed you to be near the water if you wanted, or farther back where it was quiet. It was easy to get cabanas and lounge chairs daily, and waiters came to you with drinks and food throughout the day! There were some vendors on the beaches, but they were very friendly and discrete and I did not find them to be pressuring or distracting. The food was made to order and brought right to your beach chair for lunch, and the drinks were good! We drank a lot of vodka sodas/gin and tonics, mojitos, and the odd blended drink. The staff was really helpful with recommendations if you were in the mood for something specific (sweet, fruity, refreshing etc.). I didn’t find the drinks to be watered down at all which was nice!
Tell me you have seen a more beautiful beach!
The rooms were minimalistic, and very clean. Nothing fancy, but everything you needed. The mini fridge was stocked with a couple of waters, cokes, and coronoas daily and FYI the bottle opener is ON THE FRIDGE… I know if Andreea is reading this she is probably howling because I may have opened these bottles in very creative ways for the first day until I realized there was in fact a bottle opener on the fridge. The only complaint in the room was it was FREEZING. You do have control over the air in your room, but we found it really hard to maintain a comfortable temp – but given the amount of time we were actually in the room, we didn’t really care! All of the rooms opened into the resort (see pic below) which felt really safe. I have been to some resorts in the past where it was set up so all of the balconies looked out onto the resort meaning all of the entrances to the rooms were in the back. I was never a fan of this set up because it kind of felt like I was going down a dark alley to my room, this resort was set up in the opposite way and I loved that.
All of the little black doors by the greenery above the lobby are the rooms. This bar was the main lobby area and directly behind the bar was the buffet.
Looking up from the lobby seen in last picture
Overall, we loved the Krstal Grand Punta Cancun and I know I would definitely return! If you do go to this resort, make sure to ask for Edwin at The Grill. Edwin made our experience amazing, he was friendly and attentive and really worked SO hard every day. IF somehow this post gets back to anyone at the Krystal, thank you for staff like Edwin!!!

Ok now for the really fun part… what to bring! If you are anything like me half of the fun of going away is finding new things to wear on vacation. I tried to reign it in this time and not spend a TON of money on new items however I was really in need of new bathing suits so that was the majority of my purchases. Below are the items I bought for my trip that I loved! Click the images to shop 🙂
This was the first time I had ever even been on the Zaful website, but I heard so many good things about it that I decided to give it a go. Given that I have clothes from an extra small to a large depending on the store…. I wasn’t overly confident that I was going to find bathing suits I loved online without being able to try them on. I was wrong! I was sincerely surprised by Zaful for a couple of reasons: 1) it was FAST, I qualified for express shipping and it was at my door within a week, 2) The quality was amazing – and I mean it! I was totally expecting some very thin material but these suits were thick, well stitched, and everything was even and well fitting. The reviews on the site said everything fit very small but this was not my experience. Everything I bought fit fairly true to size, but I will say if you have to size up/down due to availability…. don’t size down. Below are the suits I got, and I was happy with every single one 🙂
I ran into Old Navy the night before I left as I still hadn’t found a perfect black one piece. I was so glad I stopped by as they actually had so many cute suits! This black one piece has removable straps and I wore it that way for my trip as I like the strapless look. The second suit was just really flattering and fit me well! I like having options when I am away, and was also looking for suits that would be good for next summer as well. I like the high waisted bottoms and bikini top look and this one sat at the perfect place on me.
I hate even saying this because to me it is a sign I am getting old… but WHYYYYY are jean shorts SO short now. Forget how they look, they are SO uncomfortable when sitting down! Usually American Eagle is guilty for this short SHORT SHORT trend, but I was pleasantly surprised this year when I tried on a few pairs. These shorts have the look of a short short, very distressed and light, but I found them to be a great length. Very comfortable, and slightly high waisted so they looked really cute with a short/bodysuit tucked in!

So the first four bathing suits pictured below I did not buy, but MAN I WISH I WOULD HAVE. They were added to the site after I got back, but they are SO CUTE so I wanted to share. Forever 21 is still my go to online shop because I find their clothing to fit me well and be true to size. The bottom bathing suit – the striped off the shoulder one – I did purchase and I LOVE. This suit has high rise bottoms which I wasn’t sure about but they were really flattering and I loved the top! I purchased two pairs of sunglasses for this trip, and unfortunately the second pair is sold out. The oversized pair pictured below were one of my favs – they give me Celine/Tom Ford vibes at a fraction of the price.
I love to have an oversized purse as a carry on and this bag was perfect. I love to carry all of my important travel documents, electronics, my make up bag, and a change of clothes in my carry on JUUUUUUST in case luggage doesn’t make it to my destination. I also like the secondary zip up pouch that comes with this bag to keep your important items safe!
Finally, I have attached some of the other products I loved having on this trip below including my favourite reads! Check em out.

- Keep Your Expectations Reasonable
If you are going to go away and nit pick about a towel out of place or a chip in the paint in your room, then don’t go! You have to keep your expectations reasonable as there are going to be downfalls to every place if you look hard enough for them. Be optimistic and go with the flow while you are away!
- Plan Out Your Wild Nights
I am going to sound super old and boring here BUT if you are going to go away to a country that is high in corruption, it only makes sense to be smart. My friend and I kind of had a rule that if one of us was drinking a lot, the other would kind of cut back. To me, it isn’t safe when you are away with just one other person to both be under the influence of any substance and not have your wits about you. Maybe this is over the top to some, but common sense to me!
- Be Punctual!
PLANES LEAVE ON TIME PEOPLE (well most of the time). Lets not take a dance with stress right before we leave… I would much rather wait at the airport for an extra hour with a Starbucks and a good book than be sprinting through the airport and starting my trip off on a stressful foot. Nothing is going to set you off, and get on each other’s nerves like being late or disorganized. Get your shit together SIS and be on time. Plus, nobody wants to be THAT person who makes a plane full of vacationers wait. Don’t be that person.
- Pack Meds
I am prone to migraines, so I was sure to pack the medication I use for this with me in my carry on AND my regular suitcase. No one likes a complainer, so do what you need to do to mitigate the risk of being sick and crabby.
- TIP staff and BE NICE
Remember you are entering a country that you are a GUEST of. Entitlement, rudeness, and insanely high expectations is just not a cute look for anyone. There were some people at our resort like this and to be honest it was uncomfortable for us to even watch them. Be kind, be patient, and be gracious.
- Be Mindful
It is easy when you are away to get caught up in the WHAT’S NEXT mentality. Try and take it day by day, take in your beautiful surroundings, and take time to reflect on yourself while you are in this oasis. Be present!
Thats it! That’s all I got for ya. If you have those cute bathing suits, follow my tips, go to the Krystal and STILL don’t have a good time…. then I don’t know how to help ya! LOL. Just enjoy it and I hope that if you are ever feeling overwhelmed, stressed, and SICK of winter (if you live in Canada and get the 6 month winter we normally do) then GO. You are likely never going to have thousands of extra dollars burning a hole in your pocket, and there will likely never be an “ideal” time to spend it. So GO and have fun! Take care of you!
It was so nice to get away on this trip, and I had a great time with my girl! I will definitely be returning to Krystal Grand!
